Nano coating terms

Plain-language explanations of automotive nano coating, ceramic, PPF and surface-science terms.

Nano coating
An ultra-thin protective layer engineered at the nanometer scale that bonds to a surface and changes how it interacts with water, light, chemicals and wear.
Self-healing coating
A coating with a flexible matrix that re-flows with mild heat, so light scratches and swirl marks close up and disappear with the warmth of the sun or warm water.
Ceramic coating
A liquid polymer coating that bonds to paint to add hydrophobic protection and gloss. Excalibur NanoFilm goes further with a self-healing layer up to 85× thicker.
PPF (Paint Protection Film)
A thick physical film that is cut and applied to paint for impact protection. Unlike Excalibur NanoFilm, it has visible edges and can require cutting and peeling.
Hydrophobic surface
A water-repelling surface on which water beads up and rolls off, carrying dirt away and keeping the surface cleaner for longer.
Water contact angle
The angle at which a water droplet meets a surface. Above 90° is hydrophobic; Excalibur NanoFilm reaches over 110°, so water beads and rolls off easily.
9H hardness
A surface-hardness rating on the pencil scale, where 9H is the highest common grade. It indicates strong resistance to scratches and swirl marks.
Micron (µm)
One millionth of a meter, the unit used to measure coating film thickness. Excalibur NanoFilm builds a layer of roughly 15–40 µm.
Molecular bonding
The process by which a nano coating integrates with paint, plastic and chrome at a molecular level, forming a durable, unified protective layer instead of a loose film.
Breathable coating
A coating that preserves the paint’s natural flexibility rather than sealing it under a rigid film, avoiding the cutting, peeling and visible edges of PPF.
UV resistance
The ability of a coating to withstand ultraviolet sunlight without degrading, fading or yellowing over time — verified for Excalibur NanoFilm by Eurolab (ISO 4892-2).
Oxidation
The chemical reaction between a surface and oxygen (accelerated by salt and moisture) that dulls paint and corrodes metal. A nano coating shields the surface against it.
